The last time the Swans faced Barnsley before last night turned out to be the last time that we saw Wayne Routledge in a Swansea shirt.ย ย In the play off semi final he left the pitch with an injury that would lead to him calling time on ten years at the club and ending his career having helped the Swans into the play off final that we were eventually to lose.
Signed in our first season in the Premier League Routledge was one of the best signings of the Brendan Rodgers as he played in all our seasons in the top flight and continued to have an impact following relegation helping the Swans twice into the play offs under Steve Cooper.
Fast forward six months from that last appearance and last night he watched a very different looking Swansea side dominate Barnsley with 80% possession and more than 800 completed passes highlighting just what an impact Russell Martin has had since joining the club at the end of pre-season.
Routledge was a studio guest for Quest TV who themselves are continually pouring over the Swans displays with a series of praise as more and more people notice the return of the Swansea way and the football that it is producing.
Routledge himself is a fan of the Swans play as he explained after the gameย “I’ve watched a few games this season and Swansea want to dominate possession.
“The vibe that I get is the players are excited by a new manager and new staff with new ideas.ย They have all taken on the ideas and you can see that they are coming to fruition.
“It was a bit of a challenge at the beginning as the new manager came in late but the speed in which it has been implemented is a testament to their philosophy. They’re definitely on the way up”
