Whilst there is much speculation around the arrival of a new goalkeeper at the Swansea.com stadium the future of Steven Benda seems less clear with the goalkeeper looking set to be relegated to third choice, something which he is reported as not being willing to accept.
It is therefore anticipated that Benda will depart the Swans at some stage during this transfer window and speculation is that he could even be part of the deal that sees Andrew Fisher arrive from MK Dons.
At the moment all that has been heard on this is rumour and speculation but when you consider it there will be a great deal of logic in him being part of the deal.ย The fee for Fisher was reported as being higher than the Swans wanted to ideally pay and, assuming Fisher completes the move, then MK Dons will be on the look out for a new keeper.
Benda spent the season on loan at Swindon two seasons ago and attracted some rave reviews from fans and journalists alike in Wiltshire.ย ย When he returned to the Swans last season it was anticipated that he may get more regular first team football but Steve Cooper opted to bring Freddie Woodman back to the club and he was first choice for the season.ย Benda did start this season between the sticks but was replaced soon enough by Russell Martin by Ben Hamer leaving him very much as a back up keeper – something that, at 23 years old, he does not want to be.
Benda signed a new contract last January that still has more than two years to run which means the Swans could command a decent enough transfer fee for the player and that could well be helping negotiations for Fisher and creating a deal that could work well for both sides.
Whether Benda is part of any deal for a new keeper of course remains to be seen but it does seem almost certain that he will depart this month even without any confirmed/rumoured interest of note to date.
Of course the departure of Benda will also depend on a keeper incoming but given the amount of speculation in recent weeks that seems almost certain as Russell Martin’s faith in Ben Hamer appears to be waning.
Another position to keep a close eye on this month.
