Russell Martin has defended the failed pursuit of Matt O’Riley.

He confirmed that the club were actively interested in the player, but again reiterated that funds must come in before spending on any player.

“Iโ€™ve been aware all of the way through, we have to raise money to make signings,” Martin said at today’s press conference.

“Itโ€™s been clear since the summer. Weโ€™re not swimming in the same pond that we were, parachute payments have gone.

“Someoneโ€™s been able to raise the finance. He was a target for us (O’Riley) of course. He fits the profile and a player weโ€™ve worked with.

“But there were other clubs looking at him as well. I donโ€™t feel let down or angry, itโ€™s where we are at. Iโ€™m comfortable with that.

“The business weโ€™ve done I think is fantastic. Cyrus is going to help us, you saw that on Saturday.

“Benโ€™s [Hamer] performance was raised with Fish in the building.

“And now you have Hannes who came because of the way we played and what weโ€™ve discussed. Whatever happens, I think weโ€™re going to end up stronger.”
