Martin – Every good move Bristol City had, we gave to them

Russell Martin was happy with what he saw as his Swansea team bounced back to win 3-1 against Bristol City this afternoon.

The Swans boss once again reiterated his commitment to the style of play and transition that the club is going through after a week where more questions were raised following the heavy defeat at Stoke.

But today it was all smiles, and he also paid tribute to on loan defender Finley Burns who made an assured debut and fitted in seamlessly alongside Ryan Manning and Ben Cabango.

He told the BBC: “I thought we started the game well and then there were a few sloppy moments – we had a bit of a lack of confidence from Tuesday.

“Every good moment they had we gave to them I think. We concede a goal from a mistake.

“It was a tough position to be in. We spoke about it half-time, trying to be the team we want to be and show real courage. They did that in the second half. I’m extremely proud of them. It’s been a tough week, personally and professionally.

“We have an unwavering belief and trust in what we want to do. We understand where we’re at in the transition.”ย

On the fans: “The crowd were massive again in playing their part, they fed off the energy of the team, and the team fed off their energy.

“It just makes such a huge difference. I can remember when I used to come here as a player to take on Swansea and you always felt it would be a tough place to play with the atmosphere.

โ€œThatโ€™s certainly been the case these last two games with the way the fans have connected with the team, it has been massive.

โ€œItโ€™s a really big win, and I am proud of the players and I felt we deserved to win.โ€

On 18 year old defender Burns: โ€œI thought he was great. I thought he showed what is going to come.

โ€œThe change wasnโ€™t anything to do with his performance, it was about him fatiguing in his first Championship game with the adrenaline and the energy.

โ€œI was really pleased with Fin. He has come in and really impressed everyone and I think for a debut in this league, his mentality, his quality, his willingness to defend and compete was pleasing.

โ€œWe have got a really exciting prospect on our hands and now it is up to us to develop him and make sure he understands every detail.

โ€œHe has only been here for three weeks, and we have had a lot of games in that period of time.

โ€œWith more time on the training pitch he will get better and better.

โ€œHe is fitting in so well into the squad as a character, which is so important.

โ€œWe are really, really happy with him and hopefully today will give him a springboard to really kick on from.โ€
