Russell Martin says he wished he’d been able to make further changes to the personnel at Swansea since arriving and expects somewhat of an overhaul come the summer.
The Swans boss has made a number of signings since arriving but says that some of his squad have struggled with the transition to the style of play he so desperately wants to see and the physicality in the training regime.
Some members of the squad when he arrived were clearly not suited to the possession football that Martin is unwilling to deviate from.
This saw Jake Bidwell leave in January, Jamal Lowe in the summer and the likes of Jay Fulton limited to fleeting appearances but more changes are now expected this summer when the Swans boss will have a full transfer window.
With Martin so far making a number of signings adding to the likes of Matt Grimes, Kyle Naughton, Ryan Bennett, Korey Smith and Joel Piroe – all players that he has praised in recent times – it is unclear who he believes will be part of the big overhaul.
When asked whether wholesale changes are coming in the summer, Martin said: “I think so.
“We’ve changed a lot, I probably would have liked to have changed a bit more.
“We want to play a certain way and it requires a certain character and physical profile.
“We have some excellent players here, some who are unbelievably well suited to it, some who are not ideally suited to it, but that doesn’t make them bad players.
“We have what we have until the end of the season, and I’m happy with that, the guys we have got.”
There were six of Martin’s signings in the line up on Saturday: Andy Fisher, Cyrus Christie, Finley Burns, Flynn Downes, Jamie Paterson and Olivier Ntcham, with further on the bench.
