“We will reach the Premier League again”

Matt Grimes is confident that he will once again have the chance to represent the Swans in the Premier League and firmly believes that in Russell Martin the club have the manager in charge who can deliver that return.

It’s a bold statement from a Swansea captain who looked set to leave back in the summer before the change of manager gave him a new contract and a new enjoyment in his game as he referenced the most enjoyable time of his career.

Speaking upon signing that new contract back in November, Grimes saidย “I am buzzing, it is a fantastic project here and everyone knows how much I love the club.

“The way in which we are playing has been massive. From the moment the new manager came in I knew I would take to his style straight away and I am enjoying my football now, probably more so than I have any other year.”

The Swans have had a pretty wretched run of results since Grimes extended his contract at the club but his confidence in the system and style has not changed despite the club slipping down the league to 17th ahead of tonight’s visit to West Brom.

“I want to play in the Premier League with Swansea again,” Grimes said on Friday.

“I love the club and I truly believe that he [Martin] has got what it takes, his ideas, bringing players through and hopefully adding one or two as well. We will get there.

“I think it’s there for all to see this year that we’ve been top in some of the games, it’s just about finding that consistency,” he said.

“I’m really enjoying it – probably more than I have done in my whole career to be honest.

“I wouldn’t have signed a new deal if I didn’t believe in what the manager is doing and how he’s going about getting the team playing in a certain way.

“I’m absolutely loving it, the lads are loving it, the vibe is good in the training ground. We’ve had a few difficult moments but we’re looking forward to the future.

“I hope that the fans are seeing the things that we’re doing this year and feel positively about it.”
