“The performance was really good” – Really Russ?

Russell Martin was frustrated not for the first time this season at a poor defensive showing as his side conceded weakly from an early corner to lose at Blackpool.

His toothless and unambitious team failed to carve the home side open and create any serious opportunities in yet another miserable display on the road.

Surprisingly the Swans boss says that overall the performance was good and “dominant” which to me is a little bit of a surprise and a slight disrespectful to the strong away following at Blackpool.

This was not a good performance, passing incessantly within your own half with players who are not on the pitch to create opportunities is and never will be an exciting brand of football. Dominant football is not maintaining that amount of possession to bore the opposition to death.

Madine scoring was as comical as it was expected but the Swans had the majority of the match to get back into the contest but looked puzzled at how to break down a stubborn home defence.

“We’ve let ourselves down, conceding such a poor, early goal from someone we worked on,” Martin told the media post match.

“It’s unacceptable, really. But I thought we were dominant. We were playing against a very direct team and they had a couple of counter attacks because they had a lot of the ball.

“Their biggest threat was set-pieces and goal-kicks where they could hit Gary Madine, and unfortunately we’ve paid the price for it.

“After that, we didn’t create enough, we had one massive chance with Cyrus [Christie] but when you’re playing against a team who are built on defensive structure and good out of possession, it becomes really difficult.

“Because we’ve given them a one-goal start, it changes their mentality. That’s the frustrating thing, but overall, I thought the performance was really good.”

  1. We must be the best team for possession stats and worst team for shots on target. You don’t win games unless you shoot. Martin does not seem to appreciate this and he thinks we are making progress !!

  2. Once again not enough chances being created. How frustrating it must be to be a forward player in this team, the midfield would rather pass the ball back to our goal keeper rather than put a player through. And as for the defence opposition players cross the ball for fun, nobody is good enough to stop them. … Buy the way I used to have a tortoise who was faster than Cabango!

  3. Well hat game as Russell Martin watching I far as I am concerned he is only good enough to many teams in the lower leagues blaming the players well the buck stops with him some of the players he has brought in are not good enough and with Levien & Kaplan in charge they are happy to see us just stay in the championship so they will not have to invest in the club just take money out and the supporters trust had a meeting and without informing the supporters they whent ahead and said after all these years that they would not go ahead with court action playing into the hands of these owners well I for one will not be renewing my season ticket and will not be joining the trust as well been let down badly with everything it is a good job we have points in the bag as the way we are playing we could have been heading for relegation.
