Downes out to Crystal Palace and Joe Allen in?

Social media is awash with rumours this afternoon suggesting that Flynn Downes is set to move to Crystal Palace with Joe Allen all but agreed to be his replacement.

After the signing of Harry Darling two weeks ago it had been expected that there would need to be a sale of a star player to balance the books somewhat.

And with Joel Piroe, Michael Obafemi and Downes all starring in their first seasons at the club it was just a question of who would come up with the money to prise away one of the three.

That now looks to be Downes with Palace known to have held serious interest in the former Ipswich man all summer – they also tried to sign him two seasons ago whilst he was still at Portman Road.

Should that materialise, the Swans will hope to receive a fee close to the ยฃ10m mark which would represent a large profit on the fee it took to sign him last summer.

It would undoubtedly prove a loss to the strength of the first team although it seems that Joe Allen could finally make his much anticipated return to the club is all does indeed go to plan.

A free agent, Allen has been wanted by Russell Martin all summer but funds were needed to be released within the squad to secure his signature. The potential departure of Downes would surely make up for this.

It’s sure to be an interesting few days for the club with the season kicking off in just under four weeks…

  1. Not a bad move overall.Typical of the Yanks. They still come out with a handsome profit.Imperative now that we keep Oberfemi and Piroe and start to vary the play a bit!
