Swansea City v Luton Town – the managers open up after disappointing midweeks

Russell Martin and Nathan Jones will line their sides up against each other this afternoon both looking to try and kick start a season that has not started as either of them would have liked.

Martin comes into the game with his side having won just one match so far this season and twice having seen a two goal lead disappear thanks to disappointing second halves after seemingly being in control.

For Jones it is one victory less with his Luton side winless so far this season and only Coventry City sitting between them and the bottom of the table with the Sky Blues there largely because they have played two games less thanks to the state of their pitch.

It is far too early in the season to talk about crucial games but this one starts to have the feeling of being very important to both managers as they look to overturn the positions that they find themselves in.

The pressure on Russell Martin was clear on Tuesday as he spoke after the game after witnessing the incredible statistic of his side scoring two own goals in injury time to draw a game that for so long they looked in total control of.

Three days later he is slightly calmer but still frustrated as shone through in his programme notes for this afternoon’s game “we know that it is inexcusable to relinquish a two-goal lead like that in stoppage time of a game where we have been the better side,” said the Swans boss.

“Myself and my coaching staff take responsibility for that because we are ultimately responsible for the teamโ€™s mentality.

“We simply have to be better in those situations, we are not far away from being a really good side who can impact this division, but we need to deal with those moments of difficulty a lot better and Iโ€™m confident we will.”

Jones is insisting that, despite his side’s poor start to the season, there is no need to panic

“We have to be better in all that we do and wherever we go and weโ€™ve got some decisions to make, but weโ€™re not panicking yet,” he told Luton Today.

“Weโ€™re not panicking, thereโ€™s a long way to go, but we have to turn this around, as itโ€™s a tough month.

“Weโ€™ve got a lot of journeys, got some big teams, Sheffield United, and we probably should have more points than we have.

“Weโ€™ve been better, against Birmingham, Burnley and even Preston on the weekend, we probably deserved more from those games, but we havenโ€™t got them.โ€

The game at the Swansea.com stadium kicks off at 3pm.
