Well it’s looking like a long hard season already and all that pre season optimism has disappeared quicker than Carlton Morris bypassed Ben Cabango this afternoon.
But with many players looking inconsistent at best, perhaps the most concerning drop in form has been from Joel Piroe.
Yet to score in the opening five League fixtures, last season’s top scorer cuts a forlorn figure lacking in confidence and looks anything but the ยฃ20m player everyone thought would depart this summer.
After 24 goals last season it was widely expected that Piroe would be leaving for big money but there hasn’t been the interest anticipated in the striker and it now leaves the club with a major dilemma.
Russell Martin spoke about the issue after the game and believes that a number of issues are clouding Piroe’s game at the moment with the uncertainty around his future at the forefront.
He told Wales Online: “It’s not quite clicking for him at the moment.
“He’s putting in a hell of a shift for the team. Joel came in, he knows my feelings on it. I’m not convinced he would have had the impact he had [at Swansea] for most other Championship teams last season.
“He could now, he could play for anyone. It really suited him. He got himself in great shape, he’s working so hard for the team, but in front of goal his mind is not quite clear yet. That’s for a number of reasons.
“He’s unsure what’s going to happen, the longer the window goes on, so the minute the window shuts hopefully he’ll be a bit clearer and hopefully we’ll still have Joel, and I’m sure that’ll help him.
“It’s just difficult for him at the minute. Once he gets one, he’ll relax and the rest will keep coming because he’s getting into the positions.”
Will we see Piroe leaving before September?
