It may seem as if the process to appoint Russell Martin at Southampton has dragged its heels this week but with the Premier League closing its doors for another season this afternoon it means that the Saints can push on with appointing their new manager, an appointment that is expected to be confirmed on Tuesday.

The finer details of the compensation package is said to be agreed between the two clubs with the only hold up being the wait for the end of the Premier League season.

The Saints have already confirmed that current manager Rubรฉn Sellรฉs will not have his contract renewed at the end of the season.ย  Sellรฉs will take charge of his last game when the Saints entertain Liverpool this afternoon.

Once that game is out of the way Southampton will press on with moving to confirm Martin’s appointment and he is expected to be unveiled to the press on Tuesday at which point his work officially starts.

Martin is expected to take in this afternoon’s game and has already started his planning for his new role in the days that passed since agreement was reached.ย  ย He is expected to take Matt Gill and Dean Thornton with him as part of his backroom staff as a bare minimum.

For their part the Swans have continued to progress informal talks with several managerial prospects, something that is planned to continue this week although sources close to the club have suggested that we could be a couple of weeks away from making any appointment from this front.

But back to Martin’s departure which is the one that everyone is waiting to get confirmed it does appear that we can finally move on with this confirmation coming through this week.
