It has been reported that Sheffield United could turn their attentions to Joel Piroe after their deal to try and bring in Aston Villa’s Cameron Archer hit a hitch.
The Blades have identified Archer as someone they want to take to Bramall Lane to help with their campaign following return to the Premier League and after the departure of some key players this summer.
They started last weekend with a defeat to Crystal Palace and are seen as one of the favourites for relegation this season hence their desire to strengthen their squad.
It has been suggested though that their move for Archer is complicated by the fact that Aston Villa want a buyback clause as part of an agreement and that would be on top of the big fee that they want now.
The same report suggests that they will turn their attention to Piroe who, as we know, has been subject to pretty extensive speculation around a move away already this summer.ย ย With his contract due to expire next summer, the Swans have tentatively opened discussions over a potential new deal which would at least protect his value if nothing else.
With the transfer window now having a little over two weeks to run, options for all clubs are starting to run down and the Blades will definitely be looking to wrap up a deal for at least one new striker before the window closes.
Sheffield United do of course have a former Swans striker on their books already in Oli McBurnie, who has also been the subject of speculation this summer already after never really being a constant success since making his move North back in 2019.
Could it be that somewhere in the middle of all of this there is a potential deal to be had that could include some level of return to SA1 for McBurnie who was our leading scorer in the Championship under Potter?ย ย As unlikely as it may seem it could give the Blades enough leverage to make some level of deal happen?ย ย Or is that nothing more than wishful thinking.
The most likely outcome appears to be they complete the deal for Archer but these are the closing stages of a transfer window and anything could happen as that deadline gets closer.
Why would Piroe want to do this?
Swap for Mc Burnie and ยฃ10 million .
Iโd have Oli Mc back in a shot I think heโs much better than piroe but wages is the sticking point
I agree withJackboot but surely heโd want more than weโd be prepared to pay .
With us having so many strikers on the books I still believe the owners are kee to get rid of Piroe.
Just checked the Sheffield United web site and neither McBurnie or Rhian Brewster have been allocated squad numbers. Does that mean that they are both surplus to requirements ? But a swap for McBurnie plus a substantial amount of cash for Piroe – No Thanks. Brewster when on loan from Liverpool seemed to be going places but unfortunately he went to Sheffield United and itโs been all downhill since which is a shame.
History shows us that players returning to the Swans inevitably “under-perform” as expectation is too high and thereby unrealistic (eg: Bony). I’d prefer to see fresh blood coming in.
