Swansea City sporting director Paul Watson has revealed that the club are not sitting back and resting after a busy summer window that saw them bring in a total of thirteen recruits – four of which arrived on a busy deadline day in SA1.
It was a stark contrast to the last January window that saw the Swans achieve absolutely nothing and a January window that went some way towards a damage of relationship between the club and former manager Russell Martin.
The departure of the latter signalled part of a big summer of change at the club which saw the arrival of Andy Coleman, Michael Duff and Watson who all combined to make this one of our busiest windows ever.
And whilst thirteen new arrivals at the club can be considered somewhat strange, Watson has said that we are already working on our January plans to add more players to the squad and that money will be available as well to ensure that it happens.
Despite the arrival of thirteen the Swans would still have shown some level of transfer profit with the ยฃ12m sale of Joel Piroe more than balancing those books along with the likes of Morgan Whittaker, Joel Latibeaudiere and Steven Benda also bringing in transfer income to the club.
So what of that January window?ย “We’re also evaluating the contract situations now,” said Watson.
“Looking at January and other clubs’ contract situations. It’s already started and we wanted to be two or three windows ahead. We want to progress. We want to evolve and get better every window.
“There’s money to reinvest. We’ve got the money for Joel in. We spent a bit this summer. We loaned Premier League players in certain areas. We want to bring our own in. So if we think it’s right and it’s the correct valuation then we’ll do it.
โWe have finished this window stronger than we started it, which was the aim.
โNow we want to improve and go again in the next window – work has already started on that front – but also for a number of windows beyond that.
โUltimately, we want to build a process that will help us continue to improve.
โWe have had the first phase now, if you like, which has been focused on recruitment because of the timing of the window and my appointment.
โThe next phase is how we go about building the recruitment process, the data analytics, the research and development aspect, and beyond.
โWe are better equipped going into the next window, so we can make decisions earlier and hopefully continue to improve the squad and maximise the opportunities to do that.”
Last January โฆ we didnโt need new players. Once Martin got over himself we were easily promotion standard.
