Brandon Cooper moves to Leyton Orient

Swansea City have confirmed that defender Brandon Cooper has left the club to sign for Leyton Orient for an undisclosed fee.

Cooper returned to the club last week from the O’s after a loan spell in the first half of the season but the deal has now been made a permanent one and Cooper leaves the Swans, a club that he joined at the age of just six years old.

Cooper’s first team opportunities have been very limited at the Swans with loan spells in recent seasons at Yeovil, Newport, Swindon and Forest Green before this season’s move to London.

A first team debut against Crystal Palace in the Carabao Cup of 2018 was followed by just ten more first team appearances so it is probably no real surprise to see him leave on a permanent deal, something he was linked with back last summer when Reading were rumoured suitors for his services.

Speaking to the Orient official website, the former Swans defender saidย “Everything about the club made me want to come back. Playing at the stadium in front of the fans who fill out the ground almost every week and the style of play suits me well. There are lots of attractive things about the club. I loved my time here, and it was a no-brainer for me to come back.”

Orient Head Coach Richie Wellens also stated his satisfaction in securing a permanent move for Cooper. Wellens said: “We’re really happy to have secured Brandon on a permanent deal. Brandon came in and was fantastic for the first few months of the season. We think that there is real room for development in him, and I think he can go on to become a really good player for the club.”

Surprising given how the end of his loan spell seemed to go, but with his contract running down it makes sense for everyone to sort his future out now. Their fans seem pretty mixed on the news. He's a good L1 defender but the discipline issues (which we never really saw apart from the odd cynical booking when playing a high line and getting caught out) soured many on him.

Yes, I wish him all the best - heโ€™s a genuinely home grown talent with an obvious love of the club. I like the Oโ€™s too - great ground, welcoming fans, and you have to admire them battling on despite the appeal of West Ham on their doorstep

I always thought that Brandon was going to make the step up. Good luck to him, just wish he had more time with our defence

I had the same view. Never seemed overly flustered when playing in a white shirt, looked accomplished enough to make it at Championship level. What do I know, eh?

Maybe this is one of those cases whereby a step down is required in order to step up.

I suspect that the actual timeline of events was something like this:

Orient: His loan is going well we would like to keep him on for the rest of the season
Swans: There is some interest elsewhere in buying him off us, you want?
Orient: We have him for the season, we don't need to buy now?
Swans: We are recalling Cooper with immediate effect
Orient: (fails to call bluff) Damn, okay we will make an offer.
Swans: (can't believe it worked) Offer accepted!

They didn't have him for the season. It was announced as a January loan when he went.

If I'm honest, there have been plenty of times when I've thought he was a better defender than Cabango as an Academy Graduate. I fully expected him to make it in the Championship after he didn't do much wrong in the handful of games he had for us and the rave reviews he had at Newport County - many of their fans are gutted he didn't sign for them.

Has Luke even had a look at him to decide if he'd like to keep him?

Been watching the Swans since the very late 1970s and running the Planet Swans website (in all its current and previous guises since the summer of 2001 As it stood JackArmy.net was right at the forefront of some of the activity against Tony Petty back in 2001, breaking many of the stories of the day as fans stood against the actions where the local media failed. Was involved with the Swans Supporters Trust from 2005, for the large part as Chairman before standing down in the summer of 2020.
