Luke Williams: Cardiff City clash is about more than just the three points

The Swans take on Cardiff City at the Swansea.com Stadium this lunchtime looking to avoid being on the wrong end of a league double for the first time but also in desperate need of a performance after the meek way they surrendered at the Cardiff City Stadium earlier this season.

That was under Michael Duff but Luke Williams is more than aware that this afternoon is more about a performance than the points and he will have fired up his side for the fixture and will want whatever eleven players he picks this afternoon to put in a big performance for the home crowd.

Under Russell Martin the Swans won four straight derby fixtures creating history in the process with the first league double in the fixture before adding to it last season with a second one thanks to Ben Cabango’s last gasp winner at the Cardiff City Stadium.

And it will be that kind of passion that Williams will be looking for from his side this afternoon and the Swans boss is more than aware as to what this fixture means to the supporters “I have been fortunate enough to be a part of this special fixture before,” said Williams “And I am very excited to have the opportunity to be head coach of Swansea City on a derby day.

As a group we are well aware of what this game means to our supporters, our club and our community, and it is down to us to turn in a performance to make you all feel proud and connected to this team that represents you.

When we have that connection it is an incredibly powerful thing, and I experienced it first hand during that previous derby I mentioned earlier.

โ€œThe points matter, but the game matters more than three points because the feeling we can give to our people is worth at least one more than that.

โ€œI know we wonโ€™t be given four points on the board if we win, but we will take the imaginary extra point for ourselves if we do.

โ€œWe will use whatever we can to be motivated to make one more tackle or one more run, to put the body on the line.

โ€œWe will use whatever we can use to give us the energy to do everything possible.”
