Two more players linked – and then the links were played down but should they have been?

In a period of three hours yesterday afternoon the Swans were linked with a swoop for both Celtic striker Oh Hyeon-gyu & Gangwon defender Lee Gi-hyuk whilst the reports were soon reported as being “wide of the mark” and unlikely to happen unless something dramatically changes.

The two links came from people who reported on the deal that will soon see Eom Ji-Sung confirmed as a Swansea City player.

First off yesterday afternoon came the report from Joel Kim who posted the tweet below shortly after 3pm

Striker Oh has fallen out of favour at Celtic Park and by the end of the season wasn’t even in the matchday squad and it is believed that his chances will be limited again in the coming season.

He signed a five-year deal in January 2023 and initially featured regularly under Ange Postecoglou but fell out of favour under former Swans boss Brendan Rodgers and has also been the subject of interest from various clubs across Europe.

It is believed that Celtic chiefs are expected to consider offers for 23-year-old Oh and several other fringe men this summer.

With the recent departure of Nathan Wood the Swans are known to be in the market for a central defender but you have to question whether Gi-hyuk would tick the boxes that we are looking at.ย ย The 23-year-old made 19 appearances for his club in the K-League last season, and has previously played for the likes of Suwon FC and Jeju United.

The two links though were dismissed just three hours later by Jason (Hanshin) Lee who tweeted the following

Two tweets, two conflicting reports so difficult to know which one is nearest the truth (technically both could be) but with Ian Mitchelmore wading in and saying that the interest in Oh Hyeon-gyu is genuine you have to assume that the first tweet may prove to be closer to the mark than was suggested afterwards.ย  ย It is worth adding here that Mitch added that a move for Oh would “prove tricky” and it’s understandable why when you consider the potential price tag that the player could be labelled with.

Watch these ones closely, no smoke without fire and all that

Interesting one went full hog with it and the other played it down BUT kept the gate slightly ajar.....which would suggest he might be guessing but is playing the get out card.

The other interesting situation is our quota of non work permit players with Ronald and Eom taking up 1 and 2 and question marks over whether Franco takes no 3 or does he get enough points to be excluded.
Anyone have any confirmation on the Franco WP situation?
Also, would the Celtic player need one as he has been in Scotland since January 2023?

I would hope the club have looked into these scenarios, I expect they have but I wouldn't want to see another 6 loans but only 5 allowed in the match day squad situation again.

All signed for us and we effed up paperwork meaning they werenโ€™t granted work permits and spent 2years with us without playing (and subsequently ruined their careers)

We donโ€™t have a great track record in this regard ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™‚๏ธ

This was interesting I saw on Twitter that the reason we didnโ€™t sign Gautier Ott was because he couldnโ€™t get a work permit

Would suggest we didnโ€™t want to use him as one of our 3 wildcard options maybe because we already plan to allocate those to other targets (and Eom)

Perhaps not as big a stretch as one would think, I have already seen talk that we are primarily looking outside of Europe because the UK and EU markets are super inflated cost wise right now.

Doesn't bode well that this wasn't looked at before they got so far, not much better that the plug was then pulled to pursue others that take the non work permit quota.

Playing 30% of a certain band should have been realised early on,Portugese 2nd division clearly falls outside that.
Saying that, as a Frenchmen then it surprises me no WP was granted.....will look into it but if he had played top flight Portuguese football then it would have been a green for go.

It was stated on here that the deal was pulled for other targets....makes a bit more sense now.

30% is based on international appearances so stand corrected.
15 points being the pass scale.

I worked out OTT would have failed miserably...worked out he would get 5 points max.
Franco for me passes with 19 points. Even if I am out then it would be by 1 or 2 points so would be massively Suprised if he doesn't get a WP.

Been watching the Swans since the very late 1970s and running the Planet Swans website (in all its current and previous guises since the summer of 2001 As it stood JackArmy.net was right at the forefront of some of the activity against Tony Petty back in 2001, breaking many of the stories of the day as fans stood against the actions where the local media failed.
