Legg To Return?

Swansea In For Andy Legg?

I believe that ‘mutual consent’ is the term used in situations like this when a player leaves although a 70% cut in wages I wouldn’t call overly mutual but that is the figure banded about as to why he didn’t sign a contract to remain with the Bluebirds in Division One.

His name was immediately linked with Barry Fry at Peterborough along with that of someone else leaving Cardiff this summer, Steve Jenkins. But Legg has been on the radio as well claiming that Huw Jenkins has been in touch with him and offered him the chance to return to the Vetch Field.

It does appear however that Swansea will not be alone in looking to secure the veterans services with BBC Sport reporting that as well as us and Peterborough there is also already interest from Cheltenham, Luton, Huddersfield and Colchester.

I have to say that I would not necessarily put Andy Legg high on my list of preferred targets this summer and I hope that this is not a knee jerk reaction, if indeed there is truth in what Legg is saying. The board and management have done a good job this season in building a squad ahead of the new season and although Legg may improve it slightly I would also suggest that there are players as good as, if not better, than him around this summer who we could be looking for and trying to add to the books.

It was a few weeks ago when someone posted (I think on Swanmail) that we only seem to be linked with players that have a connection to either Swansea or Wrexham and whilst some of the names are great (Trundle, Martinez etc) there is a danger that we can start being quoted as not looking any further than the end of our noses. Let’s remember that the best additions to the squad last season had no previous connections with either club and came from digging deep and seeing what was out there. With 600 professionals put out of work over the summer then surely a bit of digging will find a couple of gems?

We also have to question the wage requirements. Whatever the deal was that Cardiff offered him it amounted to what he says was a 70% cut. I am assuming it must have been a deal based on appearances? Could we afford to come close to the wages that he was getting last season? We are all aware of Mr Hammam’s ability to borrow money for Cardiff!!

Personally I think the way is forward and whilst Legg did a job for Cardiff would he want to do one for us? Let’s forget past players, we let them go and success or not let’s start forgetting ‘Swansea’ or ‘Wrexham’ as the criteria for looking at new players?
