Murphy Is Goalkeeping Target?

Murphy was released by Man City during the summer having spent a period on loan at both Oldham and Peterborough last season. He made one appearance for the Posh during his time at London Road which, to date, is his only league experience.

Murphy though is a Republic or Ireland Under 20 International and played in all but one match last year when the Irish side came fourth in the European Youth championships.

Murphy is described on the FAI site as “Brian Kerr’s first choice goalkeeper throughout qualification and the European Championships, Brian Murphy is the latest in a long line of promising Irish stoppers. He began his career with Waterford Bohemians before moving to Manchester. During qualification for the European Championships, he conceded just one goal and his long clearances also created a number of openings for the strikers.”

It was announced yesterday that Flynn was aiming to secure the services of a 20 year old Irish born goalkeeper from the Premiership and this we believe to be our man.

The lack of experience will be a worry should we need to call on his services early on in the season but at the same time he comes with a glowing reference from those at the FAI and that can give us some comfort. Although experience is not under his belt, ability is there from what I have read and is surely a better option for us than Tony Pennock who we must remember had just 3 league appearances under his belt.

Anyone remember George and Mildred?
