Swans Fans Anger As Game Called Off |
Brian Flynn made the decision to call of tonight’s game at around five hours notice with the reason being believed that we had no fit goalkeeper to take his place between the sticks. With first choice Roger Freestone suffering from a severe dead leg and both Brian Murphy and Ryan Harrison unavailable, the club called the match off after 2pm this afternoon. However, we have learned of several Swans fans who had made arrangements to make the trip to Twerton Park including some who had already set off when the game was called off. Only as a result of phone calls did they find out of the decision by the club but this left them angry by what had gone on. Tom from Weston found himself actually in Bath with a couple of mates "I can’t believe this. We have taken a day off work to come here and now we find that we have to turn around and go straight back home. Surely this is a disregard for those fans that we are told helped us so much last season? We are a professional football club we must have been able to get a goalkeeper from somewhere?" Tom was not alone. I spoke to Keith Haynes from the MAGS earlier and he added this "I have had six or seven phone calls this afternoon from people who had left work early. They had heard a rumour that the game was off and they wanted confirmation. Some of them weren’t best pleased when I told them. I have to question the timing of this decision – couldn’t we have called the game off on Saturday?" I can half understand the club’s logic in calling this game off but I can also empathise with those fans who were either already en route or indeed in Bath ready for the game. We have a hefty support just the other side of the Severn Bridge and it was natural that many of them would have made the trip for tonight’s game as their first real chance to see the Swans in action this season. I can’t believe that the club took this decision lightly but we have had many debates over the years over the timing of postponements. The weather is usually the factor in these decisions but this time it seems it was down to the fact that we could not field a full team. This of course is just the summised reason that has been taken but with no club spokesman to comment, the fans are left to do just that – summise. I genuinely feel for any Swans fan who was already heading to the game tonight and maybe Keith does have a point when he says that maybe the decision could have been taken earlier. It seems a shame for something so relatively trivial to cloud some people’s judgement when there are so many positives around the club this summer but you cannot blame people for being hacked off when something like this happens. To quote another Swans fan this afternoon "Have we hired Robin Sharpe to replace Peter Owen" Whatever happens now, Flynn needs to head into the transfer market and quickly with the Bradford tournament coming up over the course of the weekend and rumours hit us that Brian Murphy may be signing a contract on Thursday with the club. However, as it stands he will be the only fit keeper if that happens so maybe two ventures into the market are called for at this moment? |
