Swans Win With Some Ease |
First half goals from Lenny Johnrose (penalty) and Kevin Nugent put the Swans in at the break 2 goals to the good before Jamie Rewbury and 2 from last season’s leading scorer James Thomas wrapped up the rout in the second half. The win follows on from convincing wins over Coleraine (4-1) and Port Talbot (6-0) ahead of the first league fixture of the season against Bury a week on Saturday at the Vetch. The only set back, result wise, for Brian Flynn so far has been a 2-0 reverse to Scottish Premier Division side Aberdeen last Saturday at Bradford. The Swans now move on to face Noordwijk on Thursday night before returning home and wrapping up their pre-season with a game against Llanelli Town next Monday night at Steboneath Park. Meanwhile, Andrew Mumford has joined the ranks of ex-Swans at the Kassam Stadium by signing a week to week contract with Oxford United. Mumford teams up again with Matthew Bound and Julian Alsop at the Kassam and will be given the chance to prove his worth to them in the next few weeks. Chairman Huw Jenkins has also warned Swansea fans that the club are ‘unlikely’ to sign a centre back before the new season starts as the budget is close to being used up. Jenkins told the Evening Post “We will be more than happy to start the season with what we have got. A lot will depend on whether Brian intends to sign the three trialists. We have a budget to work to and that budget is close to being used up. Brian knows how much he has got to spend.” Jenkins refused to concede that the spending will stop once the action starts “A lot is going to rest on how well we start and how good the crowds we get are. The more money coming into the club, the more players there will be coming in. If the finances are there, we will strengthen as and when we need to.” With Jason Smith out injured and prone to more injuries it leaves just Kristian O’Leary as the only recognised experienced centre back at the club ahead of the new season. Leon Hylton, Stuart Jones and Richard Duffy all wait in the wings to take a berth if there is one spare – time will tell whether that is the choice that Brian Flynn decides to take up. Speculation is still that he will be looking at a loan option to fill the gap that he has there with the name of Alan Tate still being banded about despite Flynn ruling this out as an option a couple of weeks ago. |
