Marks Out Of Ten

With 7 wins in the opening 10 games, things are looking bright for Brian Flynn’s team as they head into an away match at Hull, co-incidentally the same fixture as they faced last time around in the 11th game of the season. That time round it was a James Thomas header that earned a point for the Swans – a result that I am sure we will take on Tuesday night?

Looking at a straight comparison over the two seasons, these are the fixtures and results in the first ten games

LAST SEASON THIS SEASON
Opponent Result Points Opponent Result Points
Rushden 2-2 1 Bury 4-2 3
Darlington 2-2 2 Cheltenham 4-3 6
Bury 2-3 2 Boston 3-0 9
Bournemouth 2-0 5 Oxford 0-3 9
Bristol R 1-3 5 Mansfield 4-1 12
York 1-2 5 Yeovil 0-2 12
Hartlepool 2-2 6 Scunthorpe 2-2 13
Wrexham 0-4 6 Macclesfield 3-0 16
Boston 0-1 6 Huddersfield 2-0 19
Torquay 0-1 6 Carlisle 2-1 22

16 points ahead already of where we were last season and growing game on game at this moment. Certainly promotion winning form when you consider that after 10 games last season, Hartlepool (eventual champions) only had 21 points on the board.

A look at our fixtures for October would suggest plenty of points that are well within our grasp as well. Again, not too dis-similar to last season – a comparison on the October fixtures

OCTOBER 2002 OCTOBER 2003
Team Venue Team Venue
Rochdale H Lincoln H
Oxford A Leyton O A
Southend H Kidderminster H
Carlisle A Cambridge H
Kidderminster H Rochdale A

It was 5 points from October last year – I honestly cannot see us getting less than 10/12 from October this year which would put us at minimum 20 points ahead of the same stage last season.

But it is not just last season that we see the massive improvement on. Over the course of the last 6 seasons, the best tally that we can come up with over the first 10 matches is 16 points and that was in the championship season of 1999/2000 – sounds good that one doesn’t it?

And of course it is not only the points on the board tally that we like the sound of it is the entertainment that we are getting in the bargain. The championship season was a great season in terms of where we finished but the football doesn’t even come close to the standard that we are seeing now. People thought back in that year that there was something missing and without a doubt the missing factor is the entertainment that we get now from watching the Swans.

Win, Lose or draw on Tuesday night it does not matter as we have made a superb start to the season and with 5 very winnable games coming up in October we are more than capable of being top as October turns into November.

It’s also worth noting here as well that although Lee Trundle gets most of the plaudits, nine different players have scored for the Swans in the league this season proving that the team has goals in it all over the park and long may that continue.

It certainly is remarkable the turnaround in fortunes over the course of just twelve months. And finally it is worth noting that since the turn of the year, the Swans have picked up 53 points (15 wins and 8 draws) from 32 league fixtures.

And when you think of all that – is it really only a year since we lost 1-0 to Torquay in Brian Flynn’s opening game in charge?
