Planet Swans ArchivesCoventry’s Welsh International David Pipe, Liverpool’s Richie Partridge and Man City’s Lee Croft all feature on the list from which Flynn hopes to bring in players from to offset some of the injury problems currently doing the rounds at the Vetch Field.
During Saturday’s 2-2 draw it was evident that we missed the pace of Brad Maylett on the wing and the front pair of Kevin Nugent and Lee Trundle were all too often void of any decent service with him missing. The midfield as a result then lacked the creation that Leon Britton can bring leaving the side definitely less potent than in previous games.
With both Maylett and Flynn’s preferred choice as replacement, Kieron Durkan, both out for a couple of weeks it seems almost certain that he will look to bring in another talented youngster to boost the squad for the game in London.
Pipe won his first cap for Wales in the United States in the summer and appeared in almost half of Coventry’s games last season whilst Partridge played on loan at Highfield Road alongside Pipe last season – scoring 4 goals in 31 appearances as well as creating a host of other goals.
Croft on the other hand is an England Under-19 international who has earned rave reviews for his performances for his country. In a Leon Britton tyype mould he likes to run at defenders and has an eye for goal as well. “It isn’t easy when you have opponents who were kicking us all over the place. But my team did a great job and Crofty was superb tonight. When he got the ball, nobody could get it off him,” said Stuart Barlow after Croft had shined in a 9-0 win over Moldova at Nene Park
All three players sound as if they would be a valuable addition to the squad and, yet again, we find ourselves impressed by the quality of players that Flynn seems able to sound out about a move to the Vetch. Many fans would also agree though that we should be looking to add to the defensive side of our game and we can hope that he also has a couple of names in the frame on this front as well.
Whatever happens though it sounds as if we will be adding to the squad ahead of the game with Leyton Orient at the weekend and we can only hope that it makes the difference. Maylett was sorely missed and is not an easy player to replace at this moment in time.
Meanwhile, Lee Trundle may not be credited with the Swans equaliser on Saturday. There is a chance that the goal may now be credited as an own goal against Futcher – a decision is expected on the goal later in the week. Maybe it would be better if he was stripped of it – may make him a little more determined to grab one (or more) on Saturday!
