The Positive Legacy OF Brian Flynn |
No matter what your feelings are on the sackings you have to say that the likes of Lee Trundle, Brad Maylett, Andy Robinson and Leon Britton would be in your team ahead of Jon Keaveny. Paul Reid, David Moss and Matt Murphy any day of the week? Whatever Flynn’s failings as a manager or the reasons for his departure he has given us some good players that have the basis for a new manager to work with. I think we need to accept facts that we will never know the full reason’s for Flynn’s departure. Some fans will know more, some will think they know more but the two parties have clearly decided for now that they will use the line ‘mutual consent’ and the reasons that Brian lived too far away from Swansea. Genuinely no-one probably believes that is the only reason but it is the reason that maybe they have all settled on. Maybe the club feel it better not to give us the full reasons for his departure in a way perhaps not to damage his reputation within the game. And unless one of them breaks that silence then maybe that is all we will ever be told? Of course, we are yet to hear Brian Flynn’s side of the story and that may paint a different picture. However, whatever your views it has happened and we must move on. Brian Flynn has left us with many positives on the playing side and this is the basis, hopefully, of the club’s future. Sure some of them will be extremely disappointed by the events of the past few days and, as with any profession, some of them will be worried. They will have a new manager to whom they have to convince that they are genuinely worthwhile keeping. Those that are out of contract at the end of the season have more to prove then those that have a contract maybe? However, surely there aren’t too many managers coming into this club who will not want to keep the likes of Trundle, Britton, Maylett, Robinson, Martinez, Tate – need I go on from there? Many fans will say that without Trundle’s goals we could be towards the bottom of the league. Tate strengthened our defence, Britton is capable of anything if he gets some confidence back whilst Martinez proved last season his value on the pitch even if that has dropped in recent months. Robinson is many peoples clear player of the year despite Trundle’s goals and these players will surely form the backbone of the side that the new manager put together. Of course the new manager may know little about the worth of these players now but he will have to be guided by the likes of Alan Curtis and Richie Evans when he takes his place in the manager’s office. He will also take note that these players have contracts that stretch beyond this season – some of that down to Flynn but also sanctioned by the board who themselves would have recognised their worth to the team. Certainly playing wise we have a stronger team than we have done for a few years and potentially a stronger side to that which won the third division title four years ago. And player wise was something that not even the most ardent of anti Flynn people could argue with. I really do hope that all these players elect to stay with Swansea. They may disagree with the Flynn departure and maybe with more performances like yesterday they can prove that maybe the board were wrong. However, they will have someone new calling the shots in due course and at that stage and they can prove to him their worth to the side as they have proved to all of us this season. Whatever my personal feelings on Flynn I cannot help but to say thank you for the players that he has delivered to this club and they will provide the foundation of greater things to come? Swansea City moves on in a healthier state then it found itself 18 months ago – that cannot be denied? Let’s hope that those positives remain at the club |
