White Rock Has It Covered |
SWANSEA COUNCIL PRESS RELEASE – 14 APRIL 2004 Swansea’s iconic White Rock stadium is taking a major step forward this week as the steel structure that will form the stand roof is moved into place. A huge crane is hoisting the steel trusses for the roof of the White Rock Stadium into place. The vast white structures have been assembled on the ground and then are lifted into position. Meanwhile, progress on the steel frame forming the West Stand is rapidly continuing, with the pre-cast concrete stairs, floors and terraces being installed. It’s the latest stage in the development of White Rock, the new stadium which will provide a base for Swansea’s premier rugby and football clubs, as well as putting Swansea on the map as a leading sporting location. Councillors Byron Owen and Robert Francis-Davies under the roof trusses The รยฃ24 million venue – opposite the former Morfa Stadium site – will be one of the most modern in the UK. The pitch will be able to cope with 60 matches a season as well as host major stadium-style concerts. It’s been designed by TTH Architects who also designed Sunderland’s Stadium of Light, and the structural engineering design has been carried out by URS corporation who also worked alongside Swansea-based contractors Interserve at Murrayfield. The foundations were completed in January this year, and the stadium is anchored by 1,450 piles hidden in the ground, which would, if laid out end to end, stretch almost 13 miles. Swansea Council Cabinet Member for Culture and Recreation, Robert Francis Davies, visited the site this week with Byron Owen, Cabinet Member for Development. Councillor Owen said, "It’s been really exciting to watch White Rock take shape. It’s been progressing exceptionally well and the hard work and expertise of all involved is apparent." Councillor Davies agreed, "It’s clear that White Rock is going to be a striking development, which will really put this area of Swansea on the map. The scale of the project is huge." |
