The Welsh Cup

One of the oldest ‘national’ cup tournaments in the world, which traditionally included many English clubs from the ‘ region’ (which at times was stretched considerable further than plausible towns such as Chester, Shrewsbury and Oswestry), who utterly dominated the competition in the 1930s.

Following the establishment of a ‘League of Wales’ in 1992, which provides access to the European club cups, UEFA decreed that the winners of the Welsh FA Cup could only access the Cup Winners’ Cup (and now UEFA Cup) if the Welsh clubs playing in the English League would be excluded. After a transitional period, English clubs and Welsh clubs playing in English leagues were excluded from the 1995/96 season on.

Before, the winners of the Welsh Cup entered the European Cup Winners’ Cup unless they were English (which happened on 5 occasions, in 1977, 1979, 1984, 1985 and 1990), in which case the last surviving Welsh club (in all cases the losing finalists) entered.

In total, the Swans won the Welsh cup on 10 occasions and on 7 of those occasions represented Wales in Europe, the last of these being in 1991. Wrexham hold the record for the most number of wins with 23, closely followed by Cardiff City with 22. Shrewsbury Town are the best English representative with 6 wins. Wrexham’s record of 45 final appearances is unlikely ever to be beaten – the Swans in comparison appeared in 18.
