It’s Barking Mad I Tell You

I can accept the fact that they have dropped the name although I fail to see how it can possibly make the stadium more attractive to a potential sponsor. The council stated that they want the stadium to end up like the Reebok in Bolton or the Walkers in Leicester but they conveniently forgot The BT Cellnet Riverside Stadium in Middlesborough or the Friends Provident St Marys Stadium in Southampton. Surely "The White Rock Stadium" is better than "The Stadium?"

To me it smells of the council being unable to attract a sponsor so rather than looking closer to home for the real reason it blames something which also, rather conveniently take away something that was introduced by a past regime at Swansea Council.

Ex Council Leader Lawrence Bailey was quick enough back in October last year to introduce us to the name White Rock distancing us from the name Morfa that up until that time had always been used to refer to the stadium. We were told that it was a new project and therefore a new name was what was needed. And now, nine months later, we are told that we have to drop the name to give our beloved council a better chance of attracting a sponsor for the stadium.

You probably wouldn’t mind so much had the council found a sponsor already but they haven’t – so why drop the name until the sponsor is in place?

And of course, in true council style, it is only a matter of weeks since they spent more of the taxpayers money erecting signage in the area proudly proclaiming the name "White Rock Stadium" which today, sits proudly covered by binbags and tape – priceless! Let’s not also forget the extra taxpayers money that will eventually be spent to herald the new sponsor led name for the stadium

Personally I do not give two hoots about what the council said. The name White Rock was introduced despite a split in the Swans support over the name but it has grown on us and I cannot see it changing. In five years time will we call it stadium or White Rock Stadium? I suspect the latter.

Swansea Council have succeeded only in making themselves look stupid over this matter but after so many years this won’t come as a surprise to many fans.

Come on Swans fans, we grew used to it – White Rock it is – you know it makes sense!
