Well, Xmas came and Xmas went and hopefully you are reading this safe in the knowledge that we picked up three points at Kidderminster on Boxing Day. It’s a warm welcome to the Vetch Field for the last game of 2004 and the end of the last full twelve months here at the ground.
During those twelve months we have seen some highs and lows and there are moments that I suspect that we will never forget built into that. With that in mind, I have selected a few moments from the Vetch in 2004 – not sure whether you agree with my choices or not, please feel free to e-mail at phil@sumbler.freeserve.co.uk with your thoughts on my two choices
The High Moment – Preston North End, FA Cup 24th January.
Strangely enough this was not a high moment really for anything other than the last ten minutes or so of the game. Preston were pretty much in control of this game I felt throughout and deserving of their one goal lead when we got ‘that’ free kick on the edge of the box. With it being the wrong side for Trundle’s left foot there was only ever going to be one taker and there was only ever going to be one outcome. 1-1 and the ground erupted as we have seen it done so many times in the past. Trundle’s goal followed soon afterwards in a moment when everyone but him seemed to stand still and it generated the party that followed. A great afternoon if only for the last ten minutes
The Low Moment – Oxford United, League 6th January
For me it was a toss up between this and the York match on the last day of the season. This one swung it for me because it was a dire game of football against an Oxford side who came here to look for a point and got it with their uninspiring brand of football. Much was said about ‘hoofball’ earlier on in this season but Oxford were the world experts at it and they proved that it didn’t work for them come the end of the season
Crazy Moment – Kidderminster Harriers, League 11th September
The first goal in this game was something I don’t recall witnessing the like of before. With a goalkeeper lying prone on the floor, they lose possession we shoot, we score and Molby has kittens. It was probably the quietest celebrated goal at the Vetch in the last twelve months and in fairness it probably shouldn’t have stood. That aside there was no excuse for the way that Molby behaved after the game but I don’t suspect that this ground has seen many stranger goals in it’s 90 odd year history?
Win Of The Year – Scunthorpe, League 20th March
The first game after the surprise departure of the management. Whether there was something to be proved I don’t know but we did seem to click again for a while that day and the return of Trundle in the second half proved a catalyst to a great display. Credit must also go to the Hull game on Easter Monday which I thought was a great game in terms of excitement.
In total before today we have played 22 league games at the Vetch this season, winning 10 and drawing 7 of them. Picking up 37 points from a possible 66. Not a great record but that is marred by the end of last season where we picked up just 14 out of 33 here. I’m sure that we can build on that in the last four months of the ground and starting today how about a pact that we never lose another game here at the Vetch? It sounds good to me anyway.
That really does just about mean it’s the end from me in 2004, well done to all the Boston fans that have made the trip down this Bank Holiday but for our sakes I hope you all go home empty handed. Hope you all enjoy this game, your new year celebrations and see you all again in 2005!
C’MON THE JACKS!
