At long last Swansea’s new home is to get a new name after the name White Rock was dropped last year in a bid to get a sponsor.
The name of the stadium will be announced soon but we are informed by an insider that it will be called the “The City Of Swansea Stadium” although they will also still be looking for a sponsor for the ground which will play home to the Swans and the Ospreys from next season.
Should a sponsor be forthcoming then the stadium will continue to hold it’s name but will become for example “The City of Swansea NTL Stadium” or “The City of Swansea Nike Stadium”
The council are believed to be preparing to release this new name to the public over the course of the next couple of weeks.
Of course, this naming does bring a few points to mind
1. We were told that the dropping of the White Rock name was because of the fact a ‘clean stadium’ was easier to sell to a potential sponsor so I fail to see why the new name is any cleaner than the old one
2. If a name was to be given then why not go back to White Rock on the basis that many fans still do, and possibly always will, call the ground White Rock Stadium.
3. By introducing the name are we technically giving up looking for a stadium sponsor? Surely if one appeared to be forthcoming then we would wait to name the stadium on the basis that it is much more likely to stick if it includes the sponsors name from the outset
4. Does “The City Of Swansea Stadium” hold enough pulling power for your liking? There is no doubt that it ‘does what it says on the tin’ but can you picture yourself saying “Going down to the City of Swansea stadium tomorrow mate?”
But no matter what your thoughts there is little that we can actually do about it but I do confess that if this is the name then I preferred ‘Dave’ as an option.
