Grimsby Programme

Back again for another game after a run of taking just 1 point from the last 9 available. Not good form but if the rumours at the time of me writing this piece are to be believed then we should have at least two new faces in the squad tonight. If we have, then welcome to the Vetch guys, if we haven’t then shoot the man who started the rumours!!

Back to back away defeats is never a good way to come into any fixture but we have the chance to put that right this afternoon before two very tough games in the next week – Darlington away on Tuesday and Scunthorpe here next Saturday. If we can come out of these three games with six points in the bag as a minimum then we are very much on track for our own holy grail for this season.

I’d like to add my congratulations at this point to those already given to Sam Ricketts for his Welsh debut. There are some debutants that look as if they belong at international level and Sam was most definitely one of those. This factor means that promotion is important this season if only to keep hold of him and the other players at the club that we know can attract interest from higher levels. That aside it was great to see a Swans player in a Welsh shirt at full international level again and well done Sam – now show Grimsby what an international is all about!!

It’s been a pretty good fortnight for Welsh sport at international level with a couple of egg chasing wins thrown in as well and it has also thrown the spotlight on another magic daps from the other main sport code in the city. Good to see Lee come out on top in the Evening Post Magic Daps vote but having both of these playing at the stadium next summer will increase the interest within sport at the stadium which in turn can surely only be good news for us?

And speaking of the new stadium – “City of Swansea Stadium”? Please. After two years of thinking is that really the best that we could come up with. I am guessing that it is becoming less likely that we will have a sponsor for the new stadium but at the same time White Rock was surely a better alternative. It certainly seems to be the case in another web poll, with two out of every three Swans fans who voted preferring the name White Rock with only 1 in 10 saying that City of Swansea Stadium was a good name. I know that the council have funded the building of the stadium but surely the voices of the paying customers mean something or am I just being romantic with that thought?

I am sure that many of you have noticed the bands that players have been wearing over recent weeks. Yellow for Testicle Cancer and all that plus the big campaign that went with the issue of black and white bands for awareness of racism in football. Now call me a cynic but Nike produced these and for their part no matter how much they back the campaign surely this particular one has gone wrong with people wanting these as fashion statements rather than because they back the campaign. I am sure that a large percentage of those that have bought them do support the ethics of kicking racism out of football but a look on internet auction site, eBay, and you see them exchanging hands for up to ร‚ยฃ20 a time. The anti racism campaign receives nothing from these sales so please don’t tell me that those sales are based on people supporting the campaign. Well done to those that bought them for the right reasons though.

On that note is probably time for me to get off my high horse and think back to today’s game which following recent results has taken on more significance in terms of needing a win. The ground has been very silent in recent weeks and maybe today is the time to just give undivided support for the 90 minutes and dissect the performance after the game. We need three points so let’s get behind the lads and make the difference by spurring them on. Could this be a two way thing?

Swansea City: Andy Coleman has much to answer for right now
