Blast From The Past – Robbie James |

Robbie was my hero, along with Bob Latchford. My mates all loved Alan Curtis, but whilst Curt had the flair, Robbie was our barrel-chested midfield legend. Played for the club as man and boy, in every division. He scored vital goals, he tackle, he set them up. Forget your Lampards, Beckhams, Gerrards or Giggs, he was ‘our boy’, even when he played for Cardiff. He was the first and maybe last Swans player in the tabloids. I remember him charging over the Vetch, looking the same in his thirties as a teenager.. As a boy of 13, I will never forget him holding the Welsh Cup aloft in front of a seething mass of hatred of the Bluebirds fans in the West Terrace. I though it was the bravest thing I had ever seen. I cried when he died. I’ve had three heroes in my life: I was lucky enough to be taught by one (Maurice Wilkins) and meet one (John Peel). I only ever watched Robbie play, but that was enough.
