Blast From The Past – Wyndham Evans |
After starting his career as an amateur with Stoke City, Wyndham joined the Swans as a professional in 1971. Capable of playing in any defensive role, Wyndham also played for a spell at centre forward. Whether it was as "successful" as Paul Raynor doing the reverse move remains to be seen as I was only one year old at the time. A stalwart defender, it was only after his conversion to an attacking right full back that he was to gain popularity with the Swans fans who appreciated his committed performances. One of a handful of players at the Vetch Field, who during their playing careers, played league matches for the Swans in all four Football League Divisions. After making 390 league appearances, scoring 20 goals he was released from the Vetch Field playing staff to join his hometown club Llanelli as player manager in May 1983. However, in December 1983 he rejoined John Toshack at the Vetch Field as player coach until he was released by manager John Bond at the end of the 1984-85 season. Since then Wyndham has been manager, of amongst others Llanelli and Carmarthen Town, and remained close to the club he loves through his nephew Stuart Roberts. During the "Legends Dinner" before the Shrewsbury game, we had the honour and pleasure of having as our "legend" Wyndham on our table. He was indeed a legend; honest, informative and very funny the entire evening (also in Wind Street afterwards), with stories of the Tosh era, stories about Sir Robbie James, and many anecdotes that unfortunately I was too drunk to remember. What I can remember though was his clear love of all things Swansea City. Very many men have pulled on the Swans’ jersey, most not as many times as Wyndham, and even fewer with the pride and commitment of him. Wyndham Evans, a true Jack legend.
