Sometimes it is all well and good placing values on players head but money doesn’t always buy goals and with Trundle in this team, it has goals written all through it and today was just the evidence with numbers 33 to 37 inclusive in the league hitting the back of the net.
The leading scorers in the English leagues, winning games sometimes at a canter and pure entertainment are just some of the factors that make this Swansea side so exciting to watch. And whilst Lee Trundle does not make us a one man team he is the finishing product of what, quite frankly, is perfect football at times.
Credit to Chesterfield they came here to play and they aren’t a bad side. Most definitely they are not a bad side but they came up against us today in the same irresistible form that saw Brian Tinnion exit management having watched his side leak seven goals at White Rock.
And after a run of three league games without a win this was just what Dr Jackett ordered as Swansea built a two goal lead inside fifteen minutes and despite a blip in the first half – restored normal service before the game was half hour old. And to a man, the team performed at the level s we know they can reach and let’s not forget this was a side showing only one change from the last couple of weeks – Owain Tudur Jones in for Marcus Bean. And what a difference that one change makes – the midfield looked miles better than the one seen in recent weeks and whilst you cannot possibly blame poor form on one player alone – the return of Tudur Jones was probably the highlight of the afternoon as far as future games go.

Swansea’s first was simple in the extreme. Bayo was played through and managed to get the ball past his chasing defender and his composure was second to none as he waited to fire home under the keeper – 1-0 Swansea and the game had opened up.
Macca and Trunds had already come close before Trundle doubled the lead with the easiest goal he will score all season. A corner from the left was headed back across goal by OTJ and Trundle was afforded the freedom of White Rock to head home unmarked to double the Swans advantage.
12 minutes on the clock, the Swans 2 up, this had the makings of a drubbing with the Swans seemingly attacking at will with flowing football. But here came the stutter. For fifteen minutes we were second best. Chesterfield as I have said once are a good football side and some incisive passing cut us open a couple of times. Their goal was simple and well worked despite a defensive lapse from Swansea and at 2-1 the game was in the balance. The next goal as they say was vital.
And who else was to get it then Swansea’s very own Lee Trundle. Receiving the ball on the edge of the area, Trundle did what Trundle does in holding off the defender before hammering home his second of the game and the two goal cushion was restored. And with it so was utopia. The game was in no doubt from that point. It was stoppage time before the excellent OTJ notched goal number 4 but in fairness it was probably the best of the afternoon. A Chesterfield free kick on the edge of our pnalty area resulted in a break and with Britton, Tate and Trundle all combining in an excellent counter attack it was OTJ who cashed in after Ricketts just failed to get in on the end of Tate’s cross. 4-1 at half time and deservedly so as Swansea were the better side by a long chalk.
It’s difficult to build on 4 at half time and all too often you just see one more goal. And although that was all we saw after the break it could easily have been so many more and not just for us. Trundle completed a hat trick by turning the defender inside out and then for good measure doing it again before slotting home and the showboating section for Soccer AM was being made in front of our eyes. A thumbs up to the crowd was the reward for the call that Ricketts was supporting and Trundle was surely in the only place he wants to call home. Money isn’t up for discussion it seems – Trundle loves Swansea almost as much as Swansea loves him.
Connor replaced the excellent Bayo and could have had one had Britton spotted him at the end of another flowing Swansea move whilst at the other end Willy was dealing with everything Chesterfield threw at him and there was quite a bit.
The Swans were the deserved winners, 5-1 not far off a fair reflection on the game. The visitors showed enough to suggest they may maintain their challenge this season but this was the Swans in pretty much top gear.
Trundle will always take the plaudits for this and rightly so but at this stage I really do have to single out once more OTJ who was simply awesome on his return to the side.
Full marks all round and look out League One – the Swans are back. And what a cracker the next league game promises to be.
