Away Days – Peterborough

No treat for Swans fans as they were brushed aside in Paint Trophy Horror Show

So the second round of the great cup that is the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy came calling. Ugo’s coach (it was working this time) left Tescos at 12:45 for the long journey to Peterborough.

Even though this was a Southern section game, Peterborough is still a long way to travel on a Tuesday night, so fair play to the fans who made the journey. We were kept entertained during part of the journey with the guys at the back wearing Osama Bin Laden masks in celebration of Halloween (I don’t understand the link either, but funny nonetheless). Let’s hope no-one got offended.

I was sitting around the famous Jackarmy.net posters of stan the jack and ‘gerryhatrick’ who kept offering me sweets and chewing gum all journey, let’s hope he travels to a lot more away games.

We arrived in Peterborough at around 6pm, after a quick stop at Hopwood Services; the players were there to great us outside – Not the other way around, honestly! There was also no sign of Ron Atkinson either, quite strange that.

I bought a cheapy programme and we stopped off at the local pub for a pint of coke this time before the game.

I arrived at London Road about half an hour before kick off. It is an old fashioned ground, the small contingent of Swans fans were housed in the stand in the corner. The seats looked very old and wooden; it was hard to tell if there is normally a good atmosphere there as they were just under 1500 people at the stadium.

This was in fact my 50th league ground that I have visited in about 3 and a half years of travelling to away games, so not a bad record. The funniest part of the night was when the steward asked me how old I was. I took a while to answer, before he said I could go in for free if I wanted to – but being the honest guy I am I paid the full adult price.

It was a very cold night at Posh, the coldest this season, so only a few chants and singing from the freezing Jackarmy, the pick were ‘Stevie Bleasdale’s Barmy Army’ and ‘You’re not having Knight’

The less said about the game the better (I’m sure I said that about Saturday’s game too) Peterborough scored a goal (or should that be ghoul?) early on and it was like watching Paint dry for the rest of the game.

The coach then left straight after the game, after another 1-0 loss, and the coach arrived back in Swansea at around 2am.

I suppose the positives of being out of the cup are is that I don’t have to book anymore Tuesday nights off work, we can concentrate on the league. Only two away games this month, the next being Newport in the FA Cup, at least I don’t have to travel far for that one.
