Maybe it was famous last words but whilst Lee Trundle’s chances of facing Sheffield United hang by a thread he is looking forward to the game in today’s paper claiming that he thinks the Swans can cause one of the upset of next week’s Third Round and they are looking at the exploits of Southend – who dumped Man Utd from the Carling Cup – for inspiration
“They gave a great account of themselves and took the tie to extra time. Southend only won promotion from League One last season and they’re a similar side to us. We’ll look at what they did in those two games and go to Sheffield believing we can do something ourselves.
“Sheffield United have only just come out of the Championship – it’s not like they’re a club with players worth millions and millions. We’ve got a chance. We’re one of the better sides in League One and on our day we can give anyone a run for their money.
“They will see it as a tough game and a potential banana skin. I’m sure they will prepare for the tie as if it was a Premier League match. We’ll be going to Sheffield believing we can come away with a result.
“No matter where we go and who we play we always believe we can do something. We reached the fifth round of the FA Cup a few years ago but never played a team from the Premier League.
“But we’ve pulled one this time and it should be a great day out for everyone at Swansea. Let’s be realistic we’re not going to win the FA Cup but we can get promotion and that’s our main aim”
Swansea have a history in the FA Cup against Premiership opposition – in 1999 they became the first side from the bottom division to dump a Premiership side when they beat West Ham in a replay at the Vetch before losing to them Premiership Derby County. Another tie like that would go down well at the Liberty.
