Butler Talks Up Wingers

Butler has had a run of starts in the team recently thanks to injuries that have kept Andy Robinson and Leon Britton – the season’s early choice wingers – out of the team. And during that time he has topped the assist chart for the Swans including the cross for the goal that gave the Swans victory against Swindon on Tuesday night.

“I think the five wingers we have at this club are probably the best in the league, if not higher as well,” he says in today’s Western Mail

“The wingers we have here are all capable of playing really well. It just gives the manager the extra option to bring one of five top quality players in if someone isn’t playing well.

“If you play well then you should start anyway, regardless of the injury situation.

“Then if you don’t play well, you don’t deserve to start.

“There’s always competition and we have five wingers competing for two spots now. All that means is that you have to play well whenever you get the chance to start.

“I feel I’m in good form but obviously you get stronger and stronger as you play more games

“So, with a few more games, hopefully I can keep a good standard up. It’s going well for me at the moment. Hopefully I can keep fit and play regularly.

“Towards the end of last year I picked up a couple of injuries and it was a bit frustrating. Then going into pre-season the same thing happened, so I’m happy to be getting a run of games now.

“It’s been a frustrating few weeks for us because we want to be winning

“But I think we have turned the corner with Tuesday’s win.

“Sometimes it’s better to play away from home because teams open up against you. With the quality of players we have, we can get in and around them.”

Butler will be hoping to retain his place at Leyton Orient on Saturday as the Swans look to close the gap between them and the top of the table to just two points with a win. The O’s have started the season on top form and currently hold a three point advantage in the race for the Championship.

“I’m expecting an open game.” said Butler

“They’re doing really well and it’s away from home, so hopefully they will come out at us.

“That’s great because it’s what we enjoy. The defence has been brilliant and once you are confident with the players behind you, you can push forwards and play.

“I’m confident we can go anywhere and get points. We have to believe we can beat teams like this away from home.”
