Tom Butler is setting his sights on more goals after a brace from him at the weekend helped the Swans to a five goal destruction of Leyton Orient.
It’s the second time this year that Butler has grabbed two in an away game – the last time was on that famous weekend back in January when then Premiership Sheffield United were dumped out of the FA Cup.
But those two occasions aside, goals have been at a premium for Butler at Swansea and that is something he would like to rectify in the coming weeks and months
“I’ve not been a prolific goalscorer,” Butler admitted in the Evening Post. “I changed from being a midfielder to a winger when I was a young player and the first objective was to cross balls in for the strikers to score.
“The secondary thing was to get goals yourself, and it’s about picking the right option when the chances come. “The coaches have been saying to me for a while that if I get in I should shoot because I do it in training. “They said there’s no reason why you can’t do it in matches, so from the word go I was thinking if I got a yard I was going to try to test the keeper. “Luckily I caught the first one nicely and that’s definitely my best ever goal. Usually you only score goals like that in training or playing for the reserves, so it’s nice to make it count when it really matters.
Butler has made a strong impression during this run in the team with both initial first choice starters Leon Britton and Andy Robinson out through injury. Along with Paul Anderson they have grabbed their chance with both hands and taken the opportunity whilst it arose “I thought Paul was terrific against Orient,” the former Sunderland man added. “He worked really hard and got yet another goal and it’s great to have a squad like ours where there are four or five wingers who could easily play every week. “Britts and Robbo have been fantastic for Swansea for a couple of years, so Paul and I know that if we don’t play well, we won’t play.” Butler has fingers crossed that the Orient triumph will be a sign of things to come for Swansea, adding: “We’ve had 1-0 wins and 2-1 wins and we felt there was a big score coming. It’s happened for us against the leaders so hopefully this will give us momentum.”
