Roberto Martinez has set his sights on a management return to Wigan Athletic but Swans fans can relax in the knowledge that he wants to take his Swansea side there rather than fill the vacancy caused by Chris Hutchings’ sacking this week.
Martinez has been linked with the role at the JJB Stadium – a claim denied by Huw Jenkins who issued a “Roberto is going nowhere” message via the media this week.
And Roberto himself has moved to quell the speculation insisting that he has no plans to leave the Liberty Stadium so soon into his managerial career here.
Speaking in today’s News of the World, Martinez says “You cannot stop speculation and that is all it is.
“I have a job to do at Swansea and this is where my future lies. I would love to go back to Wigan one day – but that will only be while I’m in charge of Swansea. We are building a side here who can stand toe-to-toe with the likes of Wigan and some other big sides in English football.
“I wouldn’t want all that hard work to go to waste. When you are successful your name always seems to be linked to jobs. And while it’s flattering I try not to take too much notice of such things.
“It just proves we are doing something right at Swansea and so hopefully it can continue. You can’t let it distract you from what you need to do in the long term.
“I had six fantastic years at Wigan and Dave Whelan was the reason I came over from Spain at the time. I have great respect for him and what he has achieved in a short space of time.
“Wigan are a great example of what can be done and I hope we can join them in the Premier League before long. But I’m just at the start of a long journey at Swansea and I have no reason to want to be anywhere else.”
Except maybe the visitor’s dug out at the JJB?
