The midfielder has made an instant impression on the Swansea fans with a couple of assured performances in pre-season in games at both Neath and Carmarthen.
His background is very evident in the way that he plays the game and he certainly looks as if he will continue the tradition of Spanish imports succeeding after Roberto brought them to Swansea.
Andrea Orlandi is one of those and after an injury curtailed the end of last season for him there are also high hopes over his performances this season. And it was the influence of the winger – him and Gomez are big mates – that led to Jordi ending up at Swansea for a season long loan – a period that he admits himself could be extended if things go to plan.
Speaking to today's Western Mail, the friendship between the two was very obvious with Orlandi saying “It’s great having Jordi here, not just because of our friendship off the pitch, but because I know how good he is on it.
“I told him last season that he should try to come to the UK. But we never thought Swansea would be the club for him.
“I didn’t tell Roberto directly, but I mentioned to Iniaki Bergara (Swansea’s goalkeeping coach) that there was a very good player at Espanyol that the club should look at.
“I’m really happy with how it ended up and we are both looking forward to enjoying ourselves this season.”
Gomez had no hesitation in agreeing with his teammate and fellow countryman, adding “I spoke to Andrea a lot last season and everything he said was really good. He told me Swansea was a great club and that played a big part in my decision.
“I always wanted to play in the English league and this was a good opportunity for me to do so. Also, because there are a lot of Spanish players here, especially Andrea, Swansea seemed like it would be the best place for me to adapt to the way football is played over here.
“He spoke a lot about Roberto’s management style as well and that was also a big attraction for me. We try to play the ball here which isn’t something that always happens in English football.
“I am a midfielder that likes to play attractive football, the Spanish way I suppose. That is something Roberto, the players and the fans all like to see at Swansea, so it was a good place for me to come.
“I’ve settled really well in Swansea so far, my new team-mates are a great group and training is always different and enjoyable.
“The only thing has been the weather. But Andrea had already told me to expect a bit of a shock and it’s something I will just get used to.
“Other than that I’m just trying to get really fit because I want to play as much as possible this season. I will just work hard every day to try and get in the team.
“At the moment I am just thinking about this season. But, you never know, if I do well, then maybe I can stay for longer.”
He continued: “I haven’t seen many Championship games. But, once I knew I was coming to Swansea, I did a lot of research on the internet.
“I immediately saw how good the teams and stadiums were in the league. I’m really looking forward to playing at some of those grounds.
“I know I have adapt my style but I will do all I can to bring success for Swansea. Andrea has told me it will be difficult, but I am confident I will be ready.”
And that confidence is shared with Orlandi who is eyeing up a starting place in the line up against Charlton on August 9 “I’m pushing hard in pre-season and I just want to play my part this year, I want to start the season as strong as possible and, having been out for six months now, I can’t wait to play.”
