Newcastle's Chris Hughton was amongst a 'gaggle of Premiership scouts' who watched Gomez score the second in the Swans 3–1 victory at Oakwell that kept alive their own hopes of reaching the Premiership next season.

Gomez has been linked in recent weeks with Celtic and other Premiership clubs after a season of top class performances for the Swans whom he joined last summer in a season long loan from Esplanyol.

Yesterday's goal was his 14th strike of the season putting him way up the scoring charts in the Championship with the Daily Mail reporting "Spanish playmaker Jordi Gomez produced a stunning goal and two assists to keep Swansea's slender hopes of a play-off place intact and explain the presence of a gaggle of Premiership scouts at Oakwell.

"Newcastle coach Chris Hughton was among those who watched Gomez, the class act in an impressively hardworking Swansea side condemn a predictable Barnsley outfit to a deepening dread of relegation.

"Gomez, on a season-long loan on Espanyol for a fee of £200,000, began Barnsley's troubles in the third minute when his wickedly dipping left-wing free-kick caused panic in the goalmouth and left defender Ashley Williams to prod home from point-blank range.

"A superb, swerving left-foot shot from 25-yard range was conjured from nothing to put Swansea further ahead in the 39th minute and underline the quality of the Spaniard."
