The Swansea City striker notched his 21st league goal of the season on Monday in the 3-1 win at Barnsley as he moved in on 50 league goals in less than two seasons with the club.

Last season's League One Golden Boot gave himself an outside chance of catching Sylvan Ebanks-Blake at the head of the Championship scoring charts with his goal although he has just three games left to close the gap on the Wolves striker.

But – as you would expect – the goal tally of the man who iis classed as one of the bargains of the last couple of years is now attracting interest from elsewhere and the Mirror newspaper believes that Gareth Southgate is ready to move for his man.

The paper reports "Middlesbrough boss Gareth Southgate is ready to bid for Swansea's goal-machine Jason Scotland – whether his club beats the drop or not.

"Southgate has lined up a surprise end of season move for the Trinidad and Tobago international who has been a major scoring success since he joined the Welsh outfit.

"The Boro chief sent top spy Gordon McQueen to watch Scotland notched his 24th goal of a remarkable Championship campaign at Barnsley on Easter Monday.  And as Southagate has had problems finding a natural finisher, with Brazilian Alfonso Alves and expensive flop he plans to bring in the attacker whether Boro are in the Premier League or have been relegated.

"Scotland, 30 has probed his worth after a meandering route to the Football League and his scoring powers have peaked since joining the Swans in May 2007.

"Swansea hope to keep him by sneaking into the play offs and going up but if they fail they may lose the player."
