Planet Swans ArchivesThe former Birmingham defender made back-to-back starts for the Swans against Scunthorpe, when he played 120 minutes on his return, and against Watford on the weekend after 10 months out of action.
Painter praised his surgeon Jonathan Webb, and the Swans physio department for helping him return to action following the injury which he suffered in the 3-0 win against Southampton last October.
“A cruciate ligament is the worst injury a footballer can have, and I’ve had to work very hard to get back playing,” he said.
“But credit to the surgeon, Jonathan Webb, who was great with me, and to the physio department, who looked after me brilliantly.
“I did have days along the way where I thought I would never come back.
“I could barely bend my knee at times.
“But I have worked hard in the gym and I am proud to be playing again.
“All the effort has been worth it because I am back on the field.
“Extra time was the last thing on my mind before the game.
“It was the maddest game I’ve played, and it was very hard after so long out.
“I was cramping up after 60 minutes, so I was pretty proud to get through another 60 after that.
“It was nice to get another game under my belt at the weekend, although both results were a frustration.
“I think as a defender you need to play about six games in a row to get the feel of things and to get your fitness levels right.
“A run of games will help me settle down and feel comfortable, because you have to get used to the surroundings again after 10 months out.
“It’s hard to explain, but it’s a completely different feeling from being in the stands.
“The spirit in the camp is good — we showed that to come back against Watford — and it’s clear for everyone to see that we have a lot of players missing at the moment.
“When we get them back, we are going to be a lot stronger, and we have also brought in some quality signings who will help.”
