Swansea comfortably beat the Lilywhites twice last season – 2-0 at Deepdale and 4-1 at the Liberty – and Mellor was delighted to finally get one over the Welshmen.

The former Liverpool striker told the Preston official site: “Last season we played Swansea away from home and got a bit of a footballing lesson and lost 4-1 so it was important this time around that we were on our toes and gave them a bit of their own medicine,” the striker said after the match.

“I thought at times Swansea passed the ball really well and at times it was doggies for us to try and get the ball back. I think their home form will be key for them this season but it is really nice to get a win because last season we got turned over by them twice.”

Alan Irvine was equally pleased to get the three points: “We knew that Swansea would be really well organised and if you don’t do your job they will open you up.

“But we stuck to our task, created plenty of chances and could have won more comfortably in the end.”
