The wide man opened his Swansea City account on Saturday as the team made it nine unbeaten with a 2-0 win at Scunthorpe – a win that lifted them to 11th place in the table.
And the Dutchman says he ignored warnings about the ‘curse’ that saw Mark Gower elect to change shirts in the close season having gone a full season without a goal.
Speaking to the Western Mail, Van Der Gun said “Some of the players told me about the curse with the No 11 shirt,
“But I said, ‘no, I want that shirt.
“There was absolutely no issue for me because I had worn that number at Utrecht last season and scored 10 goals. But this was my sixth game, and I’d had a few chances before, so I was still happy to get off the mark.
“I gave the ball to Darren Pratley and took a sprint.
“I got it back perfectly to my feet, shot and it ended up in the far corner. It was a great feeling, but the most important thing was the three points.
“I only just got here, really,” he said. “I’m getting more comfortable every week. But I know I can do much better.”
