The Swansea City midfielder said that his former Arsenal colleague was not the brightest and probably didn’t even know where his own side was in the table let alone the Swans ahead of the Saturday lunchtime derby clash

Speaking to the Evening Post, Britton said “I have known Jay since I was 11 or 12, and he is not the brightest of lads.

“I was with him at Arsenal and I played with him for England schoolboys, so I know him well.

“He has had trouble in his past. I remember at Arsenal he got subbed in one game and he threw his shirt at Don Howe. That was the end of him at Arsenal. Jay is no stranger to controversy, and he is probably just looking to get a reaction with what he has said about us.

“To be honest, though, he probably doesn’t know where Cardiff are in the table, never mind where we are.

“There have been changes since last year obviously,” he adds. “Staff have gone, a couple of important players have gone and we are playing a slightly different way.

“But that happens, people come and go at clubs, and what matters is that we have adapted.

“We are actually better off in terms of points than we were last year and if Jay looks at it that way, maybe he’ll see his words aren’t correct.

“If you are going to say things like that before you go away to your rivals, you expect a tough time,” Britton says.

“But our players will probably just look at what Jay has said and have a laugh about it.

“Things get thrown back and forth before derbies and we don’t need any extra motivation before a game like this.

“I think you have got to learn to keep your head before games like this. I think you need to say the right things instead of stirring things up, but everyone’s different.”
