Twelve months ago there probably weren’t too many Swansea City fans who would have predicted the 2009 that Fede Bessone had.
Given a new lease of life under manager Paulo Sousa though, Fed has produced a string of impressive performances to such an extent that the previous first choice left back was this week loaned out to Brighton until the end of the season.
And those factors have left Bessone edging closer to a new deal that will be tiggered as and when he makes 23 league starts this season “I am a lot happier this season,” he told the Evening Post
“This season has gone very well for me as I’ve had a few more opportunities to play and settle into the team.
“My first year in a new country and league was very difficult but I have a lot more confidence now.
“I have to say I feel stronger this season.
“The gaffer has given me a chance to play a bigger role in the squad.
“I am a stronger player now and I know I can play well at this level.
“A lot of the players in this division are very strong, but you need to match them and also use your other skills to get on top.
“I’ve been involved in quite a few games. I’m really not thinking about a new contract right now,” says Bessone.
“At the moment I think only about playing my part in each game. I have to show the gaffer in training that I am ready and if he gives me the chance to play in the games then that is another huge opportunity for me.
“Football is two things. If you are playing then everything is good.
“If you are not playing, whether you are injured or not in the team, then you are very sad all the time.
“I would love to be the first-choice left-back.
“I am happy, but I am a realist as well. We have a big squad and you never know if you are going to play or not — and that is a good thing for the team.
“Marcos is not here now, but there is still tough competition for my place along with every other position in the team.
“This year I think I have improved a lot under the gaffer.
“He is trying to help me all the time.
“This is my best time at Swansea. We have a great team here and I’m happy to be part of it.”
