It was reported on Friday that Sheffield United had turned down our approach to talk to Speed but interestingly over the 48 hours since he has remained very prominent in the betting to become the new manager at the Liberty.

And today's newspaper reports that the Swans are making a second approach for Speed in the hope that they could tie up a deal certainly before the Blades head off to Malta on Monday.

It now almost appears that it may be a straight fight between Speed and Graeme Jones for the managerial job with Jones reported to be the players choice as new manager – twelve months after he followed Roberto Martinez to Wigan when the Spaniard jumped ship last summer.

The Swans have stated that they want their new man in place early next week and that would tie in with a move for Speed but would not automatically rule Jones out of the running.

Last night, Jones was the favourite for the job alongside Gianfranco Zola with Gary Speed in third place – all other runners distant bets behind them.

The search goes on…
