Monk Closing In On New Swans Contract

Monk  – the Swansea City captain – looks set to miss the start of the Premier League campaign with an injury but that frustration will be balanced with a new contract that will see him almost certainly finish his career at the club.

And with him being rumoured to be lined up for steps into management then it could be the latest chapter in what could be a very long association with the club he joined under the management of Kenny Jackett.

Brendan Rodgers told the Evening Post "Garry deserves a new contract

"He is a wonderful captain — a great leader for us both on and off the field.

"There's no doubt that over the next few years we will have to look after him and manage him — that's something you have to do with a lot of players who are over 30.

"But his influence on the club is very important.

"He is the first captain ever to lead Swansea into the Premier League, and I think he has a big part to play in the future as well.

"Garry is very professional and looks after his body really well," Rodgers added.

"He has been unfortunate with some injuries but when he plays, like in the play-off final, his contribution is very, very important.

"He is a key figure for us. I want to secure him and secure things in his mind so he can go forward with the club for the next three years.

"We have other terrific leaders like Alan Tate and Ashley Williams," he said.

"They are great inspirations for the group, but the club captain does not change."
