Rodgers – A Point Was The Least We Deserved

Brendan Rodgers insisted that a point was the least the Swans deserved after their first home Premier League game

Rodgers though was thankful to Michel Vorm for the penalty save that earned them the point that he felt they deserved against Wigan.

Rodgers said after the game “He (Vorm) was superb, it was very impressive from him.

“It was another great performance from the lad and a lot of credit must also go to our analysts and goalkeeping coach Adrian Tucker.

“We had looked at Ben Watson’s last penalty at Norwich and he went to the goalkeeper’s right and if you look back to his penalty against us in the Carling Cup last season he went to the keeper’s right that time as well.

“So Michel was primed, but he still had to make a wonderful save.

“It is something he is very good at he came over from Holland with a very good penalty record. He is a very accomplished goalkeeper and it is why we are so pleased to have got him in.

“To play how we play you’ve got to have a big personality and I think we have seen that from Michel in the last two games.

“When you miss a penalty late in the game at 0-0 then of course you are going to be disappointed. But from my point of view I thought one point was the very least that we deserved because we showed great control of the game and created chances.

“We were left just waiting for one of those chances to drop and be taken.

“We understand that against established Premier League sides they are going to have little spells in the game and in their spell they hit the bar and the post and will count themselves unlucky not to have scored. But I was very proud of my team and the way they played, especially early on.

“Of course it is about winning games but with us it is also about the performance levels as well as the results. I thought we had grown again from the Man City game and showed even greater control and confidence.

“We showed some great quality on the ball and the possession had some penetration as well, but the only down side was that we didn’t put one chance away.

“My group showed last season that they can create lots of chances and get in behind teams, especially at home, and Wigan were obviously very mindful of that and defended quite deeply.

“I was not surprised by it because we had watched their game against Norwich and that is how they set up without the ball.

“I thought defensively we were very good,” said Rodgers.

“It was a great day for the club to play it’s first ever game in the Premier League and we have taken another stride forward with that performance.

“We are growing all the time as a group. We are very much in the Premier League now it is no longer just a dream.

“Danny is a big reference point for us and he leads the line very well but he was just needing something to drop for him.

“He works so hard for the team and helps to give us a great intensity about our play.

“I’m sure he will get a goal soon enough.”
