No Excuses From Furious Brendan

Brendan Rodgers was an unhappy man after he watched his Premier League side dumped out at League Two Shrewsbury

Rodgers elected not to hide behind pointless excuses after his side was beaten 3-1 by Shrewsbury to end their involvement in this season’s Carling Cup.

The Swans threw away the gift of an own goal to collapse against their lower league opponents with fans rightly as critical of the performance as the manager afterwards.

After calling on players prior to the game to stake their claim for a place in his team against Sunderland on Saturday, Brendan was in little doubt what the performance had done to some of their chances.

“It is my most disappointing night in football,” said Rodgers.

“We are not good enough to turn up anywhere and win a game at 70 per cent.

“You need the right mindset to do the ugly bits of football.

“I have told the players to make sure they remember the Manchester City game, when they made their Premier League debuts, make sure they remember how well they played against Wigan.

“But don’t forget to tell their grandchildren that they played against Shrewsbury and lost. That is the reality. It shouldn’t happen.”

“A few of them have put their hands up to say don’t pick me

“Some of them will get on the bus and think it is a game less. I don’t think like that. I want to win every game.

“Whether or not the game wasn’t big enough for some players, I don’t know, but we had the top scorer from the Championship last season, international players, experience. We were good enough.

“I said before the game that a team would be knocked out, a big team, and they would be knocked out because their attitude wasn’t right. Ours wasn’t right.”

From here we will expect that Brendan will ensure his players do learn from the experience and hope that the result bounces back against Sunderland on Saturday.
