“It was always going to be a difficult game because Newcastle have had a terrific start to the season.

“But the players showed great character and resilience and to restrict them to just four shots on target, at home, is a great effort.

“To keep eight clean sheets in 16 games just maintains the myth that we can’t defend and are just a passing team,” he said.

“Michel made one good save in the first half, but our clean sheet record is a team ethos and all about organisation.

“I didn’t think our positioning was good in the first period,” said Brendan. “We got a bit excited when we had the ball, but we also defended well and we had to retain our calmness and composure.

“Wayne and Jazz Richards did fantastic on the right hand side to stop the threat of Santon and Gutierrez who were linking up well in the first half.

“They were two right footed players playing on the left and I thought our concentration was excellent.”
